The small business with a big heart that helps the homeless

Discover who won the Local Community Business Heart award

Our Local Community Business Heart award winner, Phil Anderson Financial, first became involved in charities through Legal and General when it ran a scheme which donated to the national charity Shelter every time a mortgage was arranged.

Phil wanted to do more

But MD Phil wanted to give at a more local level, “I discovered Aberdeen Cyrenians, a charity for the homeless closer to home,” he says, “and we set up a scheme whereby every time we arrange a mortgage we support them with a £10 donation.”  So far the scheme has generated over £1,700 for the charity.

Scott Baxter, Deputy Chief Executive of Aberdeen Cyrenians adds, “We at Aberdeen Cyrenians are delighted to receive this thoughtful and generous donation from Phil Anderson Financial Services. It comes at a time where an ever-increasing number of people are experiencing financial hardship and seeking our assistance, which Phil and his dedicated team have recognised and chosen to help.

The donations from Phil Anderson Financial support Aberdeen Cyrenians’ frontline services, which have experienced a 100% increase in demand over the last 12 months.”

And MD Phil does lots more than simply write the cheques from the comfort of his office.  For three years in succession he has swum 22 miles for the charities Diabetes UK and Aspire.

Karen Moore, Regional Fundraiser of Diabetes UK, says, “Phil has been a huge inspiration for the charity and his sponsorship will be extremely beneficial in helping us provide information, help and support people to with diabetes so they can manage their condition effectively.”

More than a signature

Phil Anderson Financial supports numerous sports and social clubs locally in Oldmeldrum, Ellon and Newhills with sponsorship, donations and kit.  And as primary sponsor of the Oldmeldrum Charity Golf Open Day in 2016 Phil Anderson Financial selected Diabetes UK as a beneficiary.

Kathleen Gordon,President of Ellon Bowling Club says, "We are very thankful to Phil Anderson Financial Services for their support over the years. They sponsor our annual Super Six tournament and our club website. The support that they give the club helps us immensely and it is greatly appreciated by all at the club."

Phil Anderson Financial’s community work also extends to regular donations of raffle prizes for local schools and charities, time off for staff to fundraise for causes close to their own hearts and in addition the business is a committed supporter of other local enterprises as a participant in the ‘Buy North East’ campaign. Marketing Director Rufus Bazley says, “The incredible commitment Phil Anderson Financial has shown to its community is amazing, and there’s little doubt that the business has impacted positively on many lives locally. It’s an inspiring story and a worthy winner of the Local Community Heart Award.”

Phil concludes, “It’s not about one big gesture, through a number of small activities we are doing our bit to help those local to us.”
